Over 740 voting sections will be set up abroad for the Bulgarian early parliamentary elections on October 2, based on a Foreign Ministry analysis, the ministry's Elections Working Group Chair Ivan Kondov told a news briefing on Thursday. He said the number may reach 760 after the Central Election Commission considers some proposals by expatriate communities.
Bulgaria is still waiting for permission to establish voting sections in Germany, Austria, Italy and Canada.
Kondov noted that a little over 50,000 Bulgarians have declared their intention to vote abroad, which is 5,000 fewer than for the previous elections in November 2021. After 55,000 people submitted such declarations last year, the actual number of those who cast their ballot abroad was more than 230,000. Although the number of declarations usually differs considerably from the actual number of those who eventually go to the polls, it is important in determining the number and the location of the voting sections.
Elections Working Group Deputy Chair Kalin Anastassov expects that 150,000 people will be added for the October 2 vote abroad.
