Foreign Minister Mitov Calls for More US Investments in Bulgaria

Washington/Sofia, July 17 (BTA) - Bulgaria wants more US
investments and tourists, and the country offers suitable
conditions for both. It is developing stably against the
background of economic and political difficulties faced by a
series of European countries, Foreign Minister Daniel Mitov said
in Washington. As part of his working visit to the United
States from July 13 to 17, he met with key representatives of
the US legislative and executive power, the Foreign Ministry
said in a press release Friday.

During his meetings in Washington, Mitov underscored that the US
visa regime applied to Bulgarian nationals does not correspond
to the excellent political relations and strategic partnership
between the two countries. This state of the relations in the
visa sphere are used by third parties to create contradictions
between the countries in the Euro-Atlantic Community, and gives
causes for negative propaganda messages, he noted. The relations
between the Euro-Atlantic partners should be of the highest
quality in all spheres, Mitov said and called on the
representatives of the US administration to continue the active
joint work for the lifting of the visa regime for Bulgarians.

The Bulgarian Foreign Minister discussed with his US hosts the
prospects for diversification of his country's energy sources.
Also discussed were the partnership relations between Bulgaria
and the United States within NATO and the need to modernize the
Bulgarian Armed Forces, as well as the opportunities for
deepening the bilateral cooperation in the fight against
terrorism.

Mitov gave public lectures at the invitation of the Centre for
Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) and the European
Institute.

The Foreign Minister also met with representatives of the
Bulgarian community in Washington to discuss the current
political situation in Bulgaria and the challenges facing the
country's foreign policy.
