site.btaBulgarian-Macedonian Friendship Club: Declaration that Bulgaria Does not Recognize Macedonian Language Obstructs Sofia-Skopje Rapprochement Process
In a statement published on Saturday, the Bulgarian-Macedonian Friendship Club argues that the Foreign Ministry’s unilateral declaration of July 19 reiterating that Bulgaria does not recognize the Macedonian language, unnecessarily complicates and obstructs the process of rapprochement between Bulgaria and the Republic of North Macedonia. The Bulgarian section of the Club here finds this document counter-productive and taking Bulgaria away from the values of democracy and mutual respect.
The Macedonian literary language, formed on the basis of dialects preserved for historical and political reasons outside of the processes of creating the Bulgarian literary language, has existed for at least 70 years and has its own complex fate. It has not been a “dialect of the Bulgarian language” for a very long time because, unlike every dialect, it serves fully all spheres of public life, the Club’s position reads.
The Macedonian language has been the mother tongue of generations of Macedonians and it cannot be taken away from them without offending their own identity, the Club argues.
