During a check of a semi-trailer truck at the Kapitan Andreevo customs checkpoint on Monday, officials found 312,500 British and 390 Scottish pounds, and EUR 174,950 hidden in a refrigerated semi-trailer. The undeclared money amounted to BGN 1,044,485, the National Customs Agency said Thursday.

The vehicle was coming from Germany and going to Turkiye, passing through Bulgaria.

Pre-trial proceedings were launched. The driver, a 36-year-old Turkish national, has been charged with failure to declare in writing before the Bulgarian customs the currency he was transporting across the EU's external border in particularly large amounts, which is a crime under the Penal Code.
