The Vazrazhdane party came up with a declaration in the National Assembly on Friday insisting that the matter about the rights of Macedonian Bulgarians should be raised at an EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Brussels on January 23 and should be brought personally to the notice of Josep Borrell, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.
The declaration was prompted by an assault on Hristian Pendikov, the Secretary of the King Boris III Bulgarian Cultural Club in Ohrid, North Macedonia, on Thursday evening. Vazrazhdane leader Kostadin Kostadinov presented the case to the National Assembly in Sofia and demanded a reaction from Skopje.
Kostadinov said that on Thursday evening Pendikov was leaving a pub when three men came up and gave him a brutal beating. He suffered a broken jaw, a head injury and two dislodged teeth. Pendikov went to the police in Ohrid to file a complaint, but they referred him to a hospital without accepting his complaint, although he was obviously in a poor physical condition, Kostadinov said.
He recalled earlier incidents in which eggs and stones were thrown and gunshots fired at the Bulgarian Cultural Club in Ohrid.
"All EU institutions turned a blind eye and a deaf ear, and are still doing it, with respect to the terrible anti-Bulgarian hysteria and hate wave in the Republic of North Macedonia," Kostadinov commented. "Last night's case proved yet again that the Republic of North Macedonia, as it is now, has no place in the EU."
The Vazrazhdane leader said Bulgarian institutions are keeping silent just like EU institutions, and the political forces in the Bulgarian National Assembly do not have the courage to admit that they were wrong to agree to lift the ban on the start of EU accession talks with Skopje. "Consequently, the possibility of physical liquidation of Bulgarians in the Republic of North Macedonia is more real, startling and likely than in the last few years."
Kostadinov accused the government in Skopje of passivity and reluctance to solve these problems, which have been aggravating in recent years. In this way, he said, the authorities of North Macedonia are encouraging the acts of anti-Bulgarianism, which will lead to physical casualties. "This should not be allowed anymore, and it depends solely and exclusively on the Bulgarian state," he said.
