site.btaUPDATED Interior Ministers of Bulgaria, North Macedonia Agree to Hold Bilateral Meeting as Soon as Possible

Caretaker Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev Friday held an urgent phone talk with his counterpart of North Macedonia Oliver Spasovski in relation to the assault against Hristian Pendikov, Secretary of the club of the Bulgarian community in Ohrid. The two ministers agreed to hold a bilateral meeting as soon as possible, the Bulgarian Interior Ministry reported.

Demerdzhiev requested to be timely informed about the progress of the investigation into the assault. Spasovski made a commitment that the case will be solved.

In Demerdzhiev’s words, there should not be such hatred. He called on the law enforcement in North Macedonia to take preventive measures so that there would be no such cases in the future. He gave as an example the Bulgarian police’s efforts to keep the public order at the opening of a Macedonian cultural club in Blagoevgrad.

Hristian Pendikov, Secretary of the King Boris III Club in Ohrid, was assaulted late on Thursday. On Friday, he was transported to Sofia by a Bulgarian government plane and hospitalized with a fractured jaw and probably broken vertebrae. He will most probably have to undergo surgery, Deputy Health Minister Alexander Zlatanov told reporters.
