In a statement in Parliament Tuesday, delivered from the rostrum by National Assembly Deputy Chair and MP for BSP for Bulgaria Kristian Vigenin, the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) condemned the recent assault on the secretary of a Bulgarian culture club in Ohrid and insisted that Bulgarian authorities undertake a more active and comprehensive approach in respect to the Republic of Macedonia.
According to the BSP, the case of club secretary is not a criminal one, but was rather motivated by the systematic incitement of hatred against Bulgaria and Macedonian citizens with Bulgarian identity, said Vigenin.
The socialists demand that the latest case, which is the culmination of a series of actions, be made known to international organisations such as the Council of Europe and the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) whose chairmanship-in-office North Macedonia happens to hold this year, the BSP MP added.
The BSP considers as unacceptable the approach of the President of the Republic of North Macedonia, Stevo Pendarovski, to to ban the entry into the country of a Bulgarian member of the European Parliament and an unspecified number of other Bulgarian citizens. The party is waiting to see what the next steps will be, but the reaction should be at top foreign minister, prime minister and presidential level. This case should not be left to be swept [under the carpet] and simply ignored, said Vigenin.
Hristian Pendikov was severely beaten on his way out of a Skopje pub on January 19. He was admitted to hospital in Sofia with multiple injuries on the face and body, and fractured lower jaw. His treatment following surgery continues.
