site.btaPES Declares Support for Bulgaria's Entry in Schengen

The Party of European Socialists (PES) adopted a resolution in which it expresses support for Bulgaria's Schengen accession.  It says that PES wants to defend and promote the Schengen agreement, which is one of the EU's greatest achievements, and to see Romania, Bulgaria and Croatia as part of it without delay. The document was approved without a single vote against or abstention at the PES congress in Berlin.

In the resolution, the Socialists propose a European pact for affordable energy and social cohesion and a European poverty law. Among the proposed measures are joint public procurement, adapting state aid rules, reviewing and regulating the energy market, and creating a comprehensive European energy storage infrastructure.

The EU treaty must include a Protocol for Social Progress: without basic social rights, there is no real freedom, the left also says.

According to the Socialists, the Green Transition is even more urgent in order to guarantee the EU's energy independence. The resolution pays particular attention to the social aspects of the transition and calls for support for the most affected sectors of society.

The war in Ukraine also features in the document. The European Socialists condemn the illegal, unjustified and unprovoked aggression and express solidarity with the Ukrainian people, stating that the negative consequences and costs of the conflict should not be paid by the poorest.

BSP delegates told journalists they had not taken part in the vote. BSP deputy chair Kristian Vigenin explained that this was the mandate of the party's executive bureau because the resolution had many good things, but also texts on sanctions against Russia, military aid to Ukraine and the Istanbul Convention. He pointed out that they accepted the resolution and it was binding on the BSP, except for these texts. Vigenin also said that they will try to work effectively with the PES and with its new President.
