site.btaFilm Week Commemorates Victims of Holocaust
A film week on the occasion of the International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust will take place at the Odeon Cinema between January 26 and 31, said the Organization of Jews in Bulgaria Shalom, which has initiated the project together with the Master of Art Film Festival and the Sofia Municipality.
In 2005 the UN declared January 27 International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust. On this date in 1945,the largest Nazi death camp Auschwitz-Birkenau, where over 1.1 million people were killed, was liberated. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the rescue of the Bulgarian Jews and 11,343 Jews from the Aegean, Vardar Macedonia and Pirot are remembered, the organizers recall.
The film week aims to present to the broader audience the fate of various Jews during the World War II. Each evening a film will be screened which presents various points of view and personal accounts of the darkest time in Europe’s modern history. Admission is free.
The film week will open on January 26 with a screening of “Orchestra of Exiles”. Attending will be Shalom Chairman Alexander Oscar, Master of Art Artistic Director Nayo Titzin, Sofia Mayor Yordanka Fandakova, Israeli Ambassador Yoram Elron, US Ambassador Herro Mustafa, and Polish Ambasador Maciej Szymański .
The programme also features “Vita Activa: The Spirit of Hannah Arendt”, "The Maestro, In Search of the Last Music”, “Vitch”, “Monsieur Mayonnaise” and “The Harmonists”.
