The first of its kind Bulgarian wine tasting took place in the Spanish capital on Wednesday. The event organized by the Bulgarian Embassy in Madrid and by Madrid’s Centro Riojano was attended by the last Bulgarian monarch Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, his son Kubrat, and Kubrat’s wife Carla, said Saxe-Coburg-Gotha’s press secretariat.

The tasting attended by 80 people, including sommeliers, representatives of the hospitality industry, chairpersons of wine associations, wine distributors, journalists, the Madrid Mayor’s office, featured both Bulgarian and local Riojan wines.

In Spain the La Rioja region is one of the most popular ones for its wines.

Three Bulgarian wineries represented this country: Vinzavod Asenovgrad, Zlaten Rozhen, and Minkov Brothers. Their selections included wines made from grape varieties absent from the Spanish market, such as Mavrud and Melnik.

The event was opened by Jose Ruperez, president of Madrid’s Centro Riojano, and Bulgarian Ambassador to Spain Aleksey Andreev.

The Spanish tasters were delighted by the quality of Bulgarian alcohol. The participating Bulgarian wineries were praised for their excellent products.
