site.btaEurostat: Bulgaria Has Men's Shortest Average Working Life Expectancy in EU

The average working life expectancy for people who are now 15 years old in the EU is 36 years. Since 2001, the projected average working life expectancy in the EU has been increasing at a steady pace before decreasing for the first time in 2020 due to the Covid-19 health crisis (from 32 years in 2011 to 35.9 years in 2019 and 35 .6 years in 2020) and returning to pre-pandemic levels in 2021, Eurostat reported on Wednesday. Bulgaria's working life expectancy in 2021 in 33.1 years.

Average working life expectancy varies widely among member states. In 2021, the longest working life expectancy in the EU was recorded in the Netherlands (42.5 years) and Sweden (42.3 years). The shortest length of working life was recorded in Romania (31.3 years) and Italy (31.6 years).

The average length of working life for men in the EU was 38.2 years, and it was the longest in the Netherlands (44.3 years) and Sweden (43.6 years), and the shortest in Bulgaria (34.6 years) and Romania (35 years). For women, the average working life expectancy in the EU is 33.7 years and is highest in Sweden (41 years) and lowest in Italy (26.9 years). 

The average length of working life for women in Bulgaria is 31.5 years.
