Bulgarian MEP Radan Kanev (European People’s Party/Democratic Bulgaria) has sent three questions to the European Commission about the Gas Interconnector Greece-Bulgaria (IGB) project, Kanev’s press office said Wednesday. This is a project of common interest for the EU, and since Russia’s invasion in Ukraine the interconnector has become even more important for the European Union and a key element of Bulgaria’s national security, the MEP is quoted as saying.
He recalls that after a delay of more than a decade, the work on the IGB was sped up by the Bulgarian government and the project was technically finalized in early May 2022. There are alarming signals from the current caretaker cabinet, including about a withdrawal of the necessary legal documentation for the joint project company, ICGB, which could lead to a delay of the interconnector’s final approval and licensing.
Kanev is asking whether the European Commission is following the project’s finalization and whether the governments of Bulgaria and Greece have presented explanations to the Commission about the reason for that delay. He is also asking whether the European Public Prosecutor’s Office is investigating a possible deliberate obstruction of the project’s finalization.
