The Bulgarians living in the canton of Bern in Switzerland have a keen interest in the Bulgarian Sunday school that opened there in 2018, school principal Virginia Lazarova Ghezzi said, speaking during the Bulgarian Hour broadcast on radio Bern.

The school is called Zora, which in English means dawn.

Thirty pupils study in the school in the current school year, in three groups: a pre-school group for children between 4 and 7 years of age, a primary school group for children between 7 and 10 years, and an advanced group for pupils between 9 and 12 years.

The school is financed by means of tuition fees, funding from the Bulgarian Education and Science Ministry, and donations. In 2019 the school joined a programme of the canton of Bern promoting mother tongue and culture teaching.

The children in the school learn Bulgarian language and traditions. All traditional Bulgarian holidays are celebrated with special events.

In addition to Bern, there are Bulgarian schools also in Zurich, Basel and Geneva.
