We will not leave the interests of Bulgarian citizens in the Republic of North Macedonia or of people with Bulgarian identity unprotected, caretaker Foreign Minister Nikolay Milkov said Wednesday in Parliament. He added that the government will take decisive measures within all international organisations and within the structures of the European Union, and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), which the Republic of North Macedonia currently chairs.
"Things cannot continue as they were, this is not a productive approach. It must be clearly understood that things have changed. We will review a number of components and elements of our bilateral cooperation with this neighbouring country," the Foreign Minister said.
He added that Hristian Pendikov received threats on the internet while he was in hospital. This, according to Milkov, indicates the complete impunity of the people who send these threats and their firm belief that they will remain unidentified.
Due to the attack on Ohrid Bulgarian cultural club secretary Hristian Pendikov, the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs had a closed session hearing with Foreign Minister Milkov and Bulgaria's Ambassador to the Republic of North Macedonia Angel Angelov Wednesday.
"We are very surprised by the unclear language of the institutions in the Republic of North Macedonia", Angelov said. He pointed out the illogical approach of Macedonian authorities – while Macedonian Foreign Minister Bujar Osmani talked of hate crime in Sofia, the Macedonian Deputy Minister of Local Self-Government said the attack was due to drug dealer misunderstanding.
The Ambassador dismissed Skopje claims that Pendikov was tried for drug dealing and said there was a document of the Bulgarian that proved otherwise. Angelov considered the impunity of hate speech, which created the negative atmosphere and led to the assault on Pendikov as the main problem.
