An online round table on the Judaeo-Spanish Language in the Balkans will take place in Sofia on March 16, the Instituto Cervantes said.
The event marks World Ladino Day and will involve eminent experts on the subject: Rita Gabai of Greece, Ivana Vucina Simovic of Serbia, Dora Mancheva of Bulgaria/Switzerland, and Felicia Waldman of Romania. They will discuss the current situation of the language in this part of the world and the chances of its survival.
UNESCO treats the Judaeo-Spanish language as threatened with extinction because of the limited number of speakers, its similarity to Spanish and weak rate of transmission to the younger generations.
