Poems by Ukrainian poets Serhiy Zhadan, Lyuba Yakimchuk and Yurii Adnrukhovych were recited at the Ministry of Culture here on Monday to mark the “21 Poets on March 21” event, which marks World Poetry Day. The poems were read by Stefan Ivanov, who is the project’s curator and a playwright at Sofia’s Sfumato theatre workshop.

The reading was attended by Culture Ministry employees and Culture Minister Atanas Atanasov and his deputies.

“In a sense, the Culture Ministry owes poetry. We decided to organize this event precisely next to the Culture Minister’s office, so that poetry can find its way into the Ministry’s heart and so we can show that poetry does not stop at the Ministry’s doorstep, but finds its way in,” Deputy Minister Yuriy Vulkovski said.

A total of 21 Bulgarian poets read their poems at the Ministry to mark World Poetry Day. The Bulgarian poets who took part in the event are Anna Lazarova, Beloslava Dimitrova, Valeri Valeriev, Vangel Imreorov, Georgi Gavrilov, Ivan Dimitrov, Ivan Landzhev, Kamelia Spasova, Nadezhda Radulova, Natalia Ivanova, Nikola Petrov, Petar Chuhov, Petya Kokudeva, Preslava Videnova, Radoslav Chichev, Reneta Bakalova, Stefan Ivanov, Stefan Ikoga, Teodora Toteva, Hristo Muhtanov and Yana Moneva.

A round table was held later in the day at the Culture Ministry between poets, translators and interested parties. An exhibition titled “Poetry on the Fifth Floor” was also staged where 21 poems by participating authors were displayed on posters at the Ministry.
