The Union of Bulgarian Actors conferred the Icarus awards for stage arts at a ceremony at the Ivan Vazov National Theatre on Sunday evening which opened with the anthem of Europe.

The Tempest (National Theatre, drama production), Koyna Ruseva (leading actress in The Master and Margarita, National Youth Theatre) and Vladimir Karamazov (leading actor  in The Tail, Pleven Theatre) are among this year’s recipients of the Icarus Awards.

Director Dimiter Iliev received the debut award for Shopping and Fucking by Mark Ravenhill.

Sevar Ivanov was recognized as best supporting actor (Agathon in Phaedra) and Hristina Dzhurova as best supporting actress (Constanze Weber in Amadeus).

Mario and Kalin Moskovsi received the award for their contribution to the circus art and Kyriakos Argiropoulos was presented with the Akt Unima Award for his contribution to the development of Bulgarian puppetry.

“Iva Is Online” by Iva Hristova won the award for play, Mila Kolarova and Rumen Gavanozov for achievements in puppetry and Pippi Longstocking for puppet production.

For variety art the award went to the Sofia Variety Theatre for Web Burlesque and for contemporary dance and performance to Alexander Georgiev for The Power of S.

Assya Racheva and Simeon Vladov were recognized as best voice-over artists.

The award of the audience was in three categories: for best contemporary dance and performance (Impossible Actions), for best puppet production (Pippi Longstocking) and for best drama production “Iva Is Online”.

Nikolay Polyakov received the best director award for The Master and Margarita. Polyakov urged the audience to observe a ten-second silence to honour the victims of the conflict in Ukraine.

Addressing the audience, Union Chairman Hristo Moutafchiev said: “Maybe out society is divided on many issues but I am sure that there is one topic which unites us all and this the war which is raging nearby. In order to show that we are united as a guild I suggest that we shout out ‘No to War!’”
