Yavor Danov, a young scientist from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) improves the effectiveness of medications for mental disorders, inflammation and chronic pain by achieving breakthroughs in his research into polymers, the Academy said here on Thursday.
Danov's work is focused on developing innovative support for bioactive substances using polymer cryogels. The results of his research were published in two prestigious international journals – “Pharmaceutics” and “Macromolecular Chemistry and Physics”.
Danov’s breakthrough also helped him become an early-career top scientist in the field of polymers, bringing him the Prof. Ivan Shishkov prize, awarded by the Union of Chemists in Bulgaria for the nineteenth year in a row.
The key to the improvements are polymers, he explains. These substances consist of very large molecules, also known as macromolecules, which can be found anywhere in everyday life – in different packaging, textile, car parts, dental and surgical devices. Polymers are also found in the human body – DNA and RNA.
According to Danov, science is society’s engine for development. There is no future without science, he says.
As а leading science organization in Bulgaria, BAS has the potential of being a main driver of Bulgaria’s progress, the young scientist believes.
