The National Museum of History has received a precious donation of a large collection of original photos of military scenes from the late 19th and early 20th century, the Museum said in a publication on its website.
The photos were donated by Mr Georgi Georgiev, a former set designer at the Ivan Vazov National Theatre.
The photos offer snapshots from Bulgaria's military history and war- and peace-time life in the period from 1887 to 1918. The photos that stand out with their interesting content and good state of repair include pictures of a regiment celebratory event in 1896, of a march after the completion of summer maneuvers of the army between 1905 and 1912, a veterinary facility in 1917, a reading room used by a howitzer unit in 1918. Other notable photos show family couples from the end of the 19th century where the husbands are from the military circles. Of particular interest are also photos from the life and career of Major General Vulko Vassilev, who led Bulgarian infantry regiments in the Balkan War and in World War One.
The donated photos have added information value due to the fact that they show period military uniforms and awards, and also because they were developed in some of the most famous photo studios of the time.
The donation of the photos enriches the collection of the National Museum of History and opens new exhibition and research opportunities for the museum experts.
