A photo exhibition marking the 30th anniversary of cooperation between Bulgaria, Spain and Argentina in Antarctica is on display at the Serdica Complex of Antique Culture and Urban Communication in downtown Sofia until May 11. The exhibition features 40 photos which have captured memorable moments from the adventures of Bulgarian Antarctic explorers together with colleagues from Spain and Argentina.
The show has been organized by the Sofia History Museum (SHM), the National Centre for Polar Studies and the Bulgarian Antarctic Institute (BAI).
It was unveiled on Monday evening by BAI Director Hristo Pimpirev and SHM Director Veneta Handjiiska-Yankulova. The ceremony was also attended by Spanish Ambassador to Bulgaria Alejandro Polanco Mata, Argentine Ambassador Alfredo Nestor Atanasoff and Antarctic scientists.
Prof. Pimpirev said the exhibition is aimed to familiarize a wide audience with the accomplishments of the three friendly nations in Antarctica. "Were it not for these two friendly nations, our little Bulgaria would not have been present in Antarctica and would not have been a respected polar nation," Pimpirev said.
The Spanish Ambassador noted that the anniversary of the Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty, also known as the Madrid Protocol, is also being commemorated. He said the exhibition was staged earlier on in the southern Bulgarian city of Plovdiv and will also be shown in the Black Sea city of Varna.
According to the Argentine Ambassador, 2022 is very important for the Antarctic relationship between Argentinians and Bulgarians. He noted the Bulgarian acquisition of the year, a new ship to be used by the Bulgarian Antarctic Base. The diplomat said all explorers should feel free to use the Argentine port which is nearest to the icy continent.
