The Valchitran gold treasure will be on display at the National History Museum (NHM) in Sofia as a part of an exhibition representing Thracian culture during the Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age, the NHM said. The exhibition will be on display from April 28 until the autumn of 2022.

The Valchitran gold treasure is the largest Thracian treasure ever discovered in Bulgaria. It was found accidentally by a farmer who was ploughing his field near the Valchitran village in the Pleven region (North Central Bulgaria) in 1924. The treasure weights 12.4 kilograms and includes thirteen items – seven lids, a large kantharos vessel, four cups and a container with three leaf-shaped vessels joined by a single handle.

The Valchitran treasure is one of the most striking examples of ancient toreutics. Archaeologists still argue over its origin. Some experts claim that it dates from the Middle Bronze Age (between 2000 and 1600 B.C.) while others argue that it dates from the Late Bronze Age (between 1600 and 1200 B.C).
