An open-air exhibition at Sofia’s Cabana Cinema presents some of the rarest birds species and habitats in Bulgaria and the progress made in their conservation. The photos of birds and landscapes are on display until May 13.

The exhibition is organized by the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds (BSPB) on the occasion of 30 years since the launch of the European Union’s LIFE Programme. Visitors can see the results of more than ten years of conservation efforts by the BSPB under LIFE projects.

The exhibition takes place with the support of Sofia Municipality.

The LIFE Programme was established in May 1992 as the EU’s funding instrument for projects aimed at protecting the environment, nature and biodiversity. It supports the implementation of the Birds and Habitats Directives and the construction of the Natura 2000 network of protected areas.

The BSPB has been working on LIFE projects since 2009, when a conservation project for the Imperial eagle and the Saker falcon was launched, the nongovernmental organization said in a press release. The project later won a number of international awards and was named by the European Commission one of the five Best of the Best LIFE projects in the Nature category.
