World-famous Bulgarian opera prima Sonya Yoncheva will grace the stage of the Bulgaria Hall on April 12 and 15, 2023, with a Handel programme at the Sofia Baroque Arts Festival. Purcell, Rameau and other composers will feature in her Sofia concerts.
Violinist Zefira Kostova, who started the festival, will be a special guest.
Yoncheva was applauded for her Baroque repertoire even as a student at the Geneva Conservatory of Music. Her voice and artistry were noted by conductor and harpsichordist William Christie, who invited her for a joint project. The soprano's second solo album of Baroque music was among the world's bestsellers of 2017-2018 and won prestigious awards, including Germany's ECHO Klassik Award.
In Sofia, Yoncheva will sing arias from Handel's operas Cleopatra and Alcina.
She is currently in New York City where she will sing the title role in Umberto Giordano's Fedora in January 2023.
