The winner of the 10th international literary student competition "Whoever saves one human life, saves the whole universe" will be able to participate in an international forum in Israel. The winner's expenses will be covered by the competition organizer, Jewish - Bulgarian cooperation centre Alef.
The competition, organized in cooperation with the Municipality of Burgas, the Ministry of Education and Science, the Ministry of Culture, and the National Palace of Children, is aimed at students from 8th to 12th grade in Bulgaria, Europe, and Israel.
This year's competition is dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the rescue of the Jews in Bulgaria from the death camps of Hitler's Germany. The theme is "A story of darkness and light". The participants will have to go back to the darkness of the Holocaust, telling the stories of the persecuted, but also about the light, the values that guided decent people back then. The pieces entered in the competition can be literary or video stories and must be based on historical facts.
The literary stories will be evaluated by a jury comprised of the competition founder Alberta Alkalay and writers Georgi Gospodinov, Georgi Burdarov, Rumen Leonidov, and Asen Yordanov. The video stories will be evaluated by the publicist Georgi Toshev.
The deadline for submissions is February 2
This year, all nominated authors will be invited to participate in the three-day International Youth Literary Festival "Friendship - meaning and salvation" at the expense of the organizers. Alef will organize the literary festival for the second year in a row in Burgas, on the Black Sea.
