The St Kliment Ohridski University of Sofia started work on a 42-month project for building a network of research higher schools in Bulgaria, the University said in a press release on Tuesday.
The project, titled Sofia University Marking Momentum for Innovation and Technological Transfer (SUMMIT), is financed by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan.
Leading researchers, who head 17 research projects, and representatives of the groups of recruited scientists, held their first meeting on Tuesday. They were welcomed by the Rector of Sofia University, Prof. Anastas Gerdjikov.
The 17 projects envisaged for financing and implementation have been proposed by leading scientists of Sofia University and their teams within the framework of fundamental research targeting fields of strategic importance for the higher educational establishment: mathematical physics and astrophysics; active formulations and materials; medicine and healthcare; modern quantum and optical technologies; computational heterogeneous catalysis; biologically active substances; functional materials; plant parasites, etc.
Other project activities include recruiting top researchers in these fields, international cooperation, support for scientific research with a potential for innovation or transfer of knowledge/intellectual property, as well as protection of intellectual property and technology transfer, including patent applications.
As part of the top researcher recruitment, fine projects of scientists and practitioners from Bulgarian and foreign research organizations and businesses will be financed and implemented with the participation of Sofia University researchers.
Within international cooperation, the project provides financing for research mobility of scientists who are active in the University's strategic areas but do not get financing under the two other activities.
