The National Philharmonic Choir will present little-known works by Antonio Vivaldi on January 24, Sofia Philharmonic said.
The concert under the baton of Tsvetan Krumov will feature Dixit Dominus and Kyrie eleison – a premiere for Bulgaria.
The composer’s Concerto Alla Rustica for Strings in G major is also on the programme, as is the special participation of the Quatro quartet.
Antonio Vivaldi is regarded as one of the greatest Baroque composers, Vivaldi's influence during his lifetime was widespread across Europe, giving origin to many imitators and admirers. He pioneered many developments in orchestration, violin technique and programatic music. He consolidated the emerging concerto form into a widely accepted and followed idiom.
Vivaldi composed many instrumental concertos, for the violin and a variety of other musical instruments (over 400), as well as sacred choral works and more than 50 operas. His best-known work is a series of violin concertos known as the Four Seasons.
It is assumed that Vivaldi composed the Dixit Dominus after 1720. It was rediscovered only recently in 2005 by Australian scholar Janice Stockigt.
The Kyrie, also dating from 1720-1735, was also discovered as late as 1926 in a monastery in Piedmont.
