site.btaDay 29 - Guiana Current Diminishes Speed of Sv. Sv. Kiril i Metodii
The Bulgarian military research vessel Sv. Sv. Kiril i Metodii (NAVAL RSV 421) continues its south-southwesterly course in the South Atlantic towards the port of Mar del Plata in Argentina. In the early hours of 24 January, NAVAL RSV 421 was sailing just off the Brazilian coast of Recife.
The warm Guiana Current flowing in from the southeast and forming in the narrowest part of the Atlantic between South America and Africa diminished the ship's average speed with about half a knot, hitting her unfavourably on the port side. Sv. Sv. Kiril i Metodii was sailing at about 8.5 knots, while the swell was around 3-4 bars.
The ship is expected to arrive in Mar del Plata in early February. The Argentinian city is the second stopover of the vessel's voyage to Livingstone Island, where it will support the 31st Bulgarian Antarctic Expedition.
BTA's Daily News editor Konstantin Karagyozov is the only member of the media who is traveling on board the ship to Livingston Island and back, and will cover the Bulgarian expedition on site throughout the stay in Antarctica.
