site.btaSofia Airport Reports over 40% Drop in Passengers in January 2022 Compared to 2019

The number of passengers serviced by Sofia Airport in January 2022 dropped by 41.3 per cent compared to the pre-pandemic 2019, the airport’s press centre said Sunday. Sofia Airport serviced 309,504 passengers last month, down by 218,000 from January 2019.

The number of passengers on regular international flights decreased by nearly 45 per cent and that of passengers on domestic flights, by 35 per cent.

Last month, Sofia Airport serviced 3,529 aircraft, which is a drop by 24.2 per cent from January 2019. The volume of processed freight and postal parcels shrank by 8.3 per cent, amounting to 1,538 tonnes in January 2022.

According to the airport, the COVID-19 pandemic continues to be the main negative factor preventing the recovery of air traffic.
