In the fourth quarter of 2021, in the conditions of a state of emergency and the ensuing epidemic situation, a total of 800,400 Bulgarians made tourist trips, according to preliminary figures released by the National Statistical Institute on Wednesday. Some 93.9 per cent travelled inland, 5.3 per cent – abroad and 0.8 per cent – both in the country and abroad. Compared with the same quarter of 2020, the total number of travellers aged 15 and over increased by 69.7 per cent.

Between October and December, 395,300 Bulgarians aged 25-44 accounted for 49.4 per cent of all travellers. Trips within the country predominated in all age groups.

The majority of domestic tourist trips of persons aged 15 and over were for family visits (52.9 per cent). The majority of trips abroad were for holiday and recreation (32.4 per cent).

In the fourth quarter of 2021, 1,020,400 or 96.4 per cent of the total number of tourist trips were individual. The relative share of unprebooked trips in the country was 97.1 per cent, while those abroad - 79.7 per cent.

In terms of expenditures, food expenditures had the highest relative share in domestic trips (37.1 per cent). Transport expenditures had the highest relative share in trips abroad (38.1 per cent).

In the fourth quarter of 2021, a person aged 15 and over spent on average 208.83 leva on a private trip in the country and 625.72 leva for a private trip abroad. The average expenditure per person for professional trip was 185.66 leva in the country and 1065.60 leva abroad.
