site.btaSofia Mayor Fandakova Confers with European Commissioners in Brussels
Sofia Mayor Yordanka Fandakova held meetings with four European Commissioners in Brussels, Sofia City Hall said in a press release on Thursday. She presented projects and plans that Sofia Municipality is working on in the areas of transport, environment and energy.
Meeting with the Commissioner for Transport - Adina Vălean, the Sofia Mayor presented the plans for expansion of the Sofia underground train service and construction of intermodal transport hubs. By purchasing electric buses, the city can develop a wide network of land transport which has connections with the metro system, she stressed.
Fandakova and the Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms, Elisa Ferreira, discussed the possibilities for improving the living environment in the neighborhoods. The Mayor presented new projects for creating more green spaces and for use of renewable energy to power heating facilities in municipal kindergartens and schools.
The Mayor briefed the Commissioner for the Environment, Virginijus Sinkevičius, on the efforts to improve air quality in Sofia. Sinkevičius expressed support for the planned introduction of low-emission zones in Sofia.
Meeting with the Commissioner for Energy - Kadri Simson, the Sofia Mayor presented the plan for modernization of the Toplofikatsiya Sofia heating utility which includes new co-generation capacity and heating network.
