The Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant has enough fuel to operate without any additional supplies for another few years, the head of the Bulgarian Nuclear Regulatory Agency (BNRA) Tsanko Bachiyski said here on Friday. He added that the Kozloduy N-plant Unit 5 can operate for another two years without additional nuclear fuel supply and Unit 6 even longer.

Speaking of spent fuel, Bachiyski said that now is not the right moment to export fuel for reprocessing despite that BNRA’s strategy is to reprocess the spent fuel.

“It is not critical. There is enough space in the storage for spent fuel so that units can operate smoothly”, Bachiyski stressed, adding that spent fuel will not be a problem for the next decade.

There are no worries for the supplies of fresh nuclear fuel, BNRA Chairman said. “One of the advantages of nuclear energy is that it is truly independent. You see, the gas flow could be stopped at any moment and there is panic. Has anyone heard anything about a NPP shutting down? No, and it will not be shut down”, Bachiyski stated.
