After inspecting on Friday the construction of the Greece-Bulgaria natural gas interconnector (IGB) near Stara Zagora, Southern Bulgaria, Prime Minister Kiril Petkov will travel to Komotini on Monday to review the state of play of the project on the Greek side too, the Government Information Service in Sofia reported.
IGB will link the natural gas transmission networks of the two neighbours, thus providing access to the Southern Gas Corridor and a range of new gas sources.
The pipeline will be 182 km long in total, most of it in Bulgarian territory. It will run through the municipalities of Stara Zagora, Haskovo, Dimitrovgrad and Kardjali and, among other benefits, it will allow gasification of all settlements in the area, the press release said.
The interconnector is of pivotal importance not just for the development of the regions but also for Bulgaria's energy independence and security. It is in excellent synergy with other major international projects such as the Trans Adriatic Pipeline and the Trans-Anatolian Gas Pipeline, and also with planned or existing terminals for liquefied natural gas.
