The first cruise ship on the Danube for the season docked on Monday at the port of Vidin. More than 100 American tourists were travelling on the luxury ship Viking Lif, funded by the Bulgarian travel agency Balkan Tours. Traditionally, the tourist season on the Danube begins in mid-March and lasts until the end of November, Belogradchik Deputy Mayor Rosen Mladenov told BTA.

Since 2010, travelling along the river has been popular among foreign tourists, especially those from America, Asia and Europe. In 2019, 325 luxury cruise ships with nearly 48,000 foreign tourists docked at the port of Vidin, according to a report by the local port administration. At the end of the 2021 tourist season, statistics show that 124 ships with 11,595 passengers passed through, Mladenov added.

According to a preliminary request, more than 320 cruise ships with nearly 32,000 foreign tourists are expected to dock at the port of Vidin throughout the season. Popular locations near Vidin that attract foreign visitors include the Belogradchik rocks and the Kaleto and Baba Vida fortresses.
