site.btaMinister: Agreement in Coalition on Divisive Issue of Parliament Concerning Road Construction Companies

Regional Development Minister Grozdan Karadjov told the press here Tuesday that an agreement was reached Monday in the government coalition on the divisive issue of payments to the road construction companies. To lower the social tension, half of the dues to the companies for work they have done will be paid out immediately and the other half will do through an interagency group set up to audit the award and implementation of the road repair and maintenance contracts, before they reach Parliament for final approval.

Karadjov expects that the draft decision of the coalition partners will be submitted to the regional development committee of Parliament. He does not expect any more turbulence on the matter.

The government owes road construction companies over 1.1 billion leva but payments were halted by a caretaker government in 2021 over suspicions of foul play in the awarding of the contracts and the project implementation.

The BBCR association of road construction companies threatens a national protest on April 20.
