Up to 60 million leva will be provided under Operational Programme Environment 2014-2020 to improve the condition of forest habitats in Bulgaria through afforestation, the Environment and Water Ministry said on Wednesday. The programme will also support ecosystem services involving forests, implemented through silvicultural practices in and outside the NATURA 2000 network.
The measure is a step forward in the implementation of an initiative by Deputy Prime Minister for Climate Policies and Minister of Environment and Water Borislav Sandov to plant 100 million trees in Bulgaria by 2030. This is the country's contribution to a European Commission campaign to plant 3 billion trees by 2030 https://ec.europa.eu/environment/3-billion-trees_en
The Council of Ministers is expected to approve the inclusion of the new measure into Operational Programme 2014-2020. After that, the proposal to alter the programme will be sent to the European Commission for approval.
