site.btaCustoms Detains Turkish Citizen with BGN 800,000+ In Undeclared Currency

A Turkish citizen has been detained and charged with failing to declare more than BGN 800,000 worth of currency, transferred at the Kapitan Andreevo border checkpoint, the prosecutor's office said on Wednesday at the Svilengrad Regional Customs press centre.

On May 3, a van with a Turkish registration arrived at the checkpoint. It was driven by Y. H. (39), who was traveling from England to Turkey via Bulgaria. Customs officers inspected the vehicle and found undeclared cash in various currencies worth 800,481 leva. The currency was distributed in packages hidden under the driver's seat of the van.

The accused Y.H. was detained for up to 72 hours by a prosecutor's order. The investigation is currently underway, the state prosecution said.

Only a day before this case, another Turkish citizen was detained at the checkpoint with undeclared currency worth 459,522 leva, hidden in the truck he was driving.
