Energy Minister Alexander Nikolov responded to his predecessor Temenouzhka Petkova's (GERB-UDF) questions about natural gas supply intermediaries during a hearing in Parliament on Wednesday about the suspension of natural gas supplies from Russia to Bulgaria.

Petkova claims that the State-owned company Bulgargaz EAD has not reserved any natural gas capacity for Bulgaria, while this was done by the MET Energy company. According to her, Bulgargaz's current Executive Director held the same position at MET Energy in the past. "The MET company will supply us with Russian gas once again, but at a price that is 30% higher," Petkova said.

"What you're referring to as intermediaries are actually traders," Nikolov respondend to Petkova, adding that MET is a trader with clear financial results and management structure. "There's no Russian gas, there's liquefied natural gas, which will be received by Bulgaria starting May 18," the Energy Minister said.

Nikolov further added that the Chiren natural gas storage facility will continue to be filled at the initially planned rate, as much as the mechanisms for natural gas supply and all other alternative routes, including the existing terminals in Turkey and Greece, allow.

After the hearing, GERB-UDF said they will alert the Interior Ministry and the State Agency for National Security to check if MET is selling more expensive Russian natural gas to Bulgargaz.

In a position sent to the media Monday, Bulgargaz also responded to claims that it uses intermediaries following the discontinuation of Russian gas supplies to Bulgaria as of April 27.
