site.btaRecord Large Illegal Cigarette Haul Seized at Bulgarian-Greek Border

Customs officers at the Kulata checkpoint on the Bulgarian-Greek border have seized 13.3 million cigarettes, the Customs Agency said on Tuesday. 

The cigarettes, found in 665,000 packs in 1,330 boxes, were seized from a Bulgarian-registered truck entering from Greece on May 6. The haul is the largest for the border with Greece since 2018. Its market value is estimated at BGN 3,657,500 and the loss of excise duty revenue alone would have amounted to BGN 2,364,075, the Customs Agency said.

Pretrial proceedings are under way.
