The minimum wage will be adjusted as of January 1, 2023, Labour and Social Policy Minister Geogi Gyokov said on Bulgarian National Television on Sunday. He said it will be set by a new mechanism.

The minimum wage in Bulgaria now is BGN 710.

“We will adopt a mechanism that will calculate the minimum wage automatically by figuring in the values in the directive for adequate minimum wage in the EU member states,” the Minister said.

He believes that there is agreement among the government coalition partners about that, as well as in the Finance Ministry.

In the new mechanism, the minimum wage will be about half of the national average wage.

Gyokov’s personal wish is to see this mechanism set in place from July 1 this year.

He said that the coalition partners and the Finance Ministry largely agree about that but also argue that it will be unprecedented to raise the minimum wage twice in one year.

The last raise was in April this year.

He said a raise in July will also cause problems for employers.
