Prime Minister Kiril Petkov will take part in a special meeting of the European Council in Brussels on Monday and Tuesday, the Government Information Service said. The EU leaders will discuss the latest developments in relation to Russia's aggression against Ukraine and the topics of defence, energy, and food security.
“For the Bulgarian government it is a priority to ensure energy security through real diversification of supply sources and routes,” the press release reads. “The growing geopolitical insecurity due to the situation in Ukraine has an evident impact on the energy sector. In addition to the crisis with energy prices, the discontinuation of gas supplies for Bulgaria by Gazprom Export on April 27 poses serious challenges to our energy and economic systems. In this relation, Bulgaria has been consistently defending the position that overcoming these challenges requires immediate and coordinated actions in the EU, with attention to the measures for guaranteeing the energy system’s sustainability and the energy’s accessibility to citizens and businesses, as well as overcoming high energy prices,” the Government Information Service said.
