Bulgaria's gross external debt amounted to EUR 41,542.1 million (55.3% of GDP) at end-March 2022, growing by EUR 2,488.3 million (6.4%) from end-March 2021 (EUR 39,053.8 million, 57.5% of GDP), the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) said on Monday.
General government’s gross external debt totalled EUR 7,554.5 million (10.1% of GDP), dropping by EUR 311.7 million (4%) from end-March 2021.
The liabilities of the central bank stood at EUR 1,938.6 million (2.6% of GDP), growing by EUR 1,099.4 million (131%) from end-March 2021.
The external liabilities of other MFIs totalled EUR 5,084.4 million (6.8% of GDP), increasing by EUR 758.8 million (17.5%) from end-March 2021.
Other sectors’ external debt equalled EUR 12,679.6 million (16.9% of GDP), growing by EUR 565.6 million (4.7%) from end-March 2021.
The stock of intercompany lending amounted to EUR 14,285 million (19% of GDP) at end-March 2022, increasing by EUR 376.2 million (2.7%) from end-March 2021 (EUR 13,908.7 million, 20.5% of GDP). It held the largest share in external debt, equating to 34.4% at end-March 2022, compared with 35.6% at end-March 20
The net flow recorded a positive value of EUR 633.6 million (0.8% of GDP) for January – March 2022, compared with a negative value of EUR 287 million (0.4% of GDP) for the period January – March 20.
The net external debt recorded a negative value of EUR 19,828.4 million (29.2% of GDP) at end-December 2021, dropping by EUR 3,889.5 million (24.4%) from a negative value of EUR 15,938.8 million (26% of GDP) at end-December 2020. Its decline was due to the larger increase in gross external assets (by EUR 6,041.1 million, 10.8%) in comparison with the increase in gross external debt (by EUR 2,151.6 million, 5.4%).
