The sixth edition of the Startup Europe Week started in Sofia on Monday. Opening the event European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, Mariya Gabriel, said that innovations are critically important for the future of Europe and Bulgaria. In Gabriel's words, the key to success in this is the creation of local innovative eco-systems which are then to be connected together. Thus, a genuine pan-European innovation eco-system will be built which is the ultimate goal of the Startup Europe Week.
Gabriel spoke in detail about deep technologies, research, investments and achievements of European unicorn companies and start-ups.
Gabriel said that 2021 was a year when record-high investments of 181 million euros were made in Bulgarian start-ups, much more than in 2020 when the figure stood at 19.8 million euros.
