site.btaWholesale Food Prices Index Goes Down 5th Week in a Row

The Market Price Index (MPI) , which reflects wholesale food prices, this week dropped by 0.52% to 2.111 points, making this the fifth consecutive week of the index going down. The previous instance of a drop in the index was in October 2021, when it reached about 1.630 points, the Commodity Exchange and Wholesale Markets State Commission reported Sunday. Since the beginning of May, the MPI has dropped by 5,26%. 

The base level of the index of 1.000 points was set in 2005.

The price of hothouse tomatoes dropped by 8.4% reaching BGN 3.28 per kg, the price of hothouse cucumbers went down by 16% reaching BGN 1.84 per kg. Cabbage was 2.1% cheaper, selling at BGN 0.93 per kg. The prices of potatoes on the other hand increased by 3.8% (BGN 1.08 per kg) and 1.2% (BGN 0.85 per item) respectively.

Apples were sold for BGN 1.34 per kg. Lemons were 12.6% more expensive (BGN 2.51 per kg). Strawberries were 8.6% cheaper (BGN 3.62 per kg). The price of cherries dropped by 21.7% , selling at BGN 3.67 per kg. 

The wholesale price of white brined cheese from cow's milk went up by 0.3% to BGN 9.75 per kg. Vitosha yellow kashkaval cheese was 0.3% cheaper selling at BGN 15.08 per kg. Sunflower oil was sold at BGN 5.04 per litre.

Chicken which was sold cheaper at BGN 5.52 per kg (a 2.5% price drop) and the price of eggs remained the same - BGN 0.27 per unit.
