site.btaEurostat: Bulgaria Has EU's 5th Highest Inflation for May

Annual inflation in the EU hit a new high, reaching 8.8% in May 2022, according to data published by Eurostat on Friday. The annual inflation of 13.4% here ranks the country 5th.

The annual inflation in the euro area is up to 8.1%, up from 7.4% in the previous month. The Russian invasion in Ukraine caused the global supply chains to deteriorate, leading to higher prices for goods and energy resources, Eurostat commented.

According to the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices, a total of 14 EU Member States registered inflation that was higher than the average for the Union. The top three spots were all taken by the Baltic states: Estonia (20.1%), Lithuania (18.5%), Latvia (16.8%).

Bulgaria’s National Statistical Institute registered annual inflation of 15.6% in May.

Some 13 EU Member States had annual inflation that was equal to or lower than the EU average. The two countries with the lowest inflation for May were Malta and France: both at 5.8%.
