A total of 8,800 people with disabilities have started working through employment offices in 2021, according to the annual report on the implementation of the policy on the rights of people with disabilities last year, quoted by the press centre of the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy on Wednesday.

A significant portion of them, 2,131 people, were employed in subsidized jobs with funding from the state budget and under Operational Programme Human Resources Development. The State has also funded the training of 628 people with disabilities.

Statistics show that last year 11,996 people with reduced working capacity were registered as unemployed with employment offices. Their number decreased by 432 compared to 2020 or 3.5%, according to the annual report.

Last year, nineteen people with permanent disabilities received funds to start and develop self-employment. The financing for securing the costs of their projects is a total of BGN 365,646 and is provided by the Agency for People with Disabilities. The funds were used to establish companies in the field of services such as restaurants, grocery stores, cosmetics, guest houses, photography and transportation.

The Agency has also funded 45 projects for accessible housing. The funds were used to build ramps, lifting platforms, elevators in residential buildings and the adjacent spaces. In 2021, funds were provided for five projects for the adaptation of a car for driving by people with permanent disabilities or for the purchase of an adapted motor vehicle. The total value of the financed contracts under the National Programme for Affordable Housing and Personal Mobility last year is over BGN 1.7 million, the Ministry said.
