site.btaBulgaria Joins Trade Union Initiative Urging Nuclear Power to be Included in EU's Taxonomy

Bulgaria joined 20 trade unions in the energy sector in Belgium, Czechia, Finland, France, Hungary, Litva, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Croatia in support of nuclear energy in the EU's taxonomy, the Energy Ministry said on Monday. 

In a joint letter, the participants urged the European Commission to include nuclear energy in the policies of the Green Deal and the REPowerEU Plan. According to them, the inclusion of nuclear energy in the EU taxonomy is vital for tackling climate change and increasing energy independence and will provide an opportunity for sustainable financing of future nuclear energy projects.

Participants noted that, alongside renewable energy sources, nuclear energy has the potential to build the basis of Europe's carbon-free energy system. As a next step, the EC should update the Nuclear Illustrative Programme (PINC) in line with Article 40 of the Euratom Treaty, which provides an overview of the objectives and the investments needed throughout the entire life cycle of nuclear energy.
