For the first time in many years, the Executive Agency for Exploration and Maintenance of the Danube River (EAEMDR) has started independent dredging in the Bulgarian section of the Danube, the Transport Ministry said.

The dredging activities are taking place following earmarked funding from the Ministry of Transport and Communications to EAEMDR. This fulfils the commitments made by the Bulgarian side to ensure the navigability of the Danube.

The agency’s dredging equipment has already started work in one of the most critical sections of the river - the one in the area of Belene Island. The dredger "Yantra", a pontoon, a raft and the maneuvering vessel "Iskar" are already on site.

The teams will work for ten days to ensure improved navigation conditions in the area after some 80,000 cu m of material are dredged.
