Nidec, one of the biggest companies in Japan manufacturing automotive electronic devices, plans to have an R&D centre in Sofia. The initial investment in the new facility will be USD 3.5 million and 100 engineers are expected to be hired in it by the end of the year, it emerged at working meetings between outgoing Innovations and Growth Minister Daniel Lorer and Philippe Marquet, E-Drive Industrialization Director at NIDEC, Lorer's Ministry said in a press release.
The meetings were also attended by Japanese Ambassador to Sofia Narahira Hiroshi, Deputy Innovations and Growth Minister Dessislava Boneva, and the Executive Director of the Bulgarian Investment Agency, Bogdan Bogdanov.
Lorer said that Bulgaria is becoming a regional centre for automotive R&D and that the planned investment continues the positive trend since the start of the year.
He said NIDEC's new facility in Sofia will develop next generation hardware and software. Lorer stressed that Bulgaria has so far been chosen for investment on account of the low labour costs but this is problematic since such undertakings are easily relocated when payroll and energy costs rise. "Now Bulgaria is becoming a location for smart labour and our aim is to promote economic growth through innovative manufacturing," he said.
Nidec Elesys Corporation is a leading manufacturer of automotive electronic controls. The company develops and manufactures electronic control devices for steering, braking, and other systems for global automotive manufacturers.
