site.btaUPDATED Day Two of Road Construction Worker' Protests in Front of Parliament Building
For the second day in a row, road construction workers gathered in protest in front of the Parliament building. The protestors pitched tents and carried signs reading: "We Want Work in Bulgaria, not Begging at the Job Market"; "Employees Are Our Greatest Asset"; "No More Lies! Adjustment Now!".
The demands of the road construction workers include the payment of BGN 720 million owed to the road industry, adoption of amendments to the legislation that would allow the indexation of construction prices, as well as amendments to Parliament's decision of April 20, which could lead to Bulgaria being left without road maintenance by September 30.
Тraffic was blocked in the National Assembly area. Protests were also being held throughout the country.
Road construction workers blocked traffic at the Belokopitovo road junction on the Hemus Motorway. Police teams were rerouting traffic.
Road construction workers from Haskovo expanded their protest to the road Haskovo - Dimitrovgrad and to the section from Harmanli to the junction with the Maritsa motorway. The AB branch organization head Hristo Hristov said the organization has yet to receive over BGN 20 million from the Road Infrastructure Agency for construction, repairs and maintenance. The other reason for dissatisfaction is the lack of price indexing. There is talk of increasing the price of natural gas by 50%, and asphalt bases use gas, Hristov pointed out.
Employees of road construction companies from Plovdiv also closed the roundabout on Pazardzhik road at the exit of the city as a sign of protest. The commitments made by the state are not respected and there is no clear policy for repairing and maintaining the roads, they commented.
