In December, Wizz Air will have a seventh plane based in Sofia and will launch two new scheduled services: to Hamburg (three times a week) and Stockholm Skavsta (twice a week), the low-cost carrier's Head of Ground Operations Roland Tischner told a news conference at Sofia Airport on Thursday.
Tickets to the new destinations are already available, at prices starting from BGN 97 and BGN 99, respectively.
The seventh plane, an A321ceo jetliner, will add 250,000 seats annually for passengers departing from Sofia. This will create 50 new jobs in the company, mainly pilots and cabin staff, and will support another 200 jobs for ground staff at the airport and beyond, Tischner explained.
A321ceo is one of the most environmentally friendly types of aircraft, the airport's CEO Jesus Caballero said. He expressed hope that charges will be kept low.
Another change is an increase in the frequency of flights to Wizz Air's 12 older destinations, which include Abu Dhabi, Barcelona and Copenhagen.
Deputy Tourism Minister Irena Georgieva said that visits by foreigners to Bulgaria in the first half of 2022 totalled 2,206,736, going up by 130.3% from the first half of 2021. She underscored the role which Sofia Airport, air travel and cooperation with air carriers play in the development of niche travel, a policy which the caretaker government will pursue.
In addition to its fleet in Sofia, Wizz Air has aircraft based in the seaside cities of Varna (three) and Burgas (one).
